About
My Background
My love of photography started more than 40 years ago as a 10 year old with a brownie camera on safari in Africa. The highlight of the trip was Ngorongoro crater, a world heritage site in Tanzania where old Africa is fixed in time. An incredible assortment of animals were there and the floor of the crater was filled with life. Gnu were there by the thousands. Zebra, gazelle, impala, cheetah, lion and many more were all there playing out their part in the circle of life with me trying to capture the spectacle from the back of a Land Rover.
Happiness Advantage
Since then I’ve been on a quest to capture images of the sheer joy of the amazing places this world has to offer. As an entrepreneur and a type A personality I learned along the way that attitude (state) has a massive effect on being able to deal with the stress of a career or running a business. Thank you Shawn Achor, “The Happiness Advantage.” Capturing these images and placing them strategically so I can see them frequently during my day has been an important part of building my company and eventually being fortunate enough to sell it to GoDaddy. Being optimistic is an incredibly important part of entrepreneurship since our natural tendency is to put more weight on protecting what we already have vs embracing the opportunity in front of us. Creating a happy state is a great way to overcome that.
Why Rady Children’s Hospital?
Rady Children’s Hospital captured my heart with their policy of “No child turned away.” It’s a place where parents in there most desperate need can always go to find help for their precious kids. RCH is filled with brilliant, inspired people driven by a mission to make the world a better place for families in San Diego and all over the world. At the heart of their efforts is the RCH Genomics Institute. Led by Stephen Kingsmore, the Genomics Institute, able to sequence whole genomes in hours is able to tell frantic families which of the 10K genomic diseases their new born has. Until recently this could take years and was often too little too late. This ground breaking technology is now being taught and offered to a growing number of hospitals throughout the world.
